Family and Relationship

Hmong people has been in the United States for about 50 years now and we are struggling to keep family and relationships up float. Let’s get to work!

The Hmong People:

The Hmong are an indigenous ethnic group with origins in China, though they are now found in many countries, including Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. After the Vietnam War, many Hmong refugees resettled in the United States, France, and other countries, forming significant diasporic communities.

Historically, the Hmong people were mostly agriculturalists, with many practicing subsistence farming on mountainous terrains. They have a rich cultural heritage, including their own traditional clothing, music, dance, and festivals, such as the Hmong New Year.

The Hmong language is a vital part of the Hmong identity, and cultural practices, such as shamanism and ancestor worship, are significant in their spiritual life.

The Hmong Language:

Hmong is part of the Hmong-Mien language family, spoken by millions of people across Southeast Asia and among Hmong diaspora communities worldwide.

It is a tonal language, meaning the pitch or tone used when pronouncing a word can change its meaning. There are several dialects, with the White Hmong (or Hmoob Dawb) and Green Hmong (or Hmoob Ntsuab) being the most widely spoken.

The Hmong language was historically oral, but there are now written systems for it. The most common script used is the Romanized Popular Alphabet (RPA), which uses Latin letters to represent Hmong sounds. There is also a traditional script called Pahawh Hmong, which was created in the 1950s.

The language is important for the cultural preservation of the Hmong people, as it is a central part of their history, traditions, and daily life. However, many young Hmong people in the diaspora are also fluent in the languages of their host countries, such as English in the U.S. or French in France.
